Off Site Meetings

The President
’
s Turn
Some time ago, we began to discuss the possibilities of hav
ing off
-
site meetings in various shops. We thought it would be a
good alternative/addition to our regular in
-
person meetings at the
Ag Museum. I am pleased to report that we have had a few so far,
and the results are very pleasing. Don Ritchie was first to offer his
shop, and what a good meeting it was. I learned how to turn a love
ly finial with just a skew chisel. Don
’
s skill set in this area is out-
standing. Phil Brown was kind enough to open his home for instruc
tion on turning pens. Then Kevin Courtney invited us to his workshop to demonstrate how to turn a "baby
rattle."
So what's the point? Well, first and foremost, the fellowship has been excellent. Secondly, I have
been given many different options and ideas for setting up my own shop. Like so many, my shop is small in
size, and I need to use my space better. After hearing the ideas of others, I have been able to make the
proper adjustments, and now I have twice the amount of room than before. I would not have been so suc
cessful if I had not been given new storage and tool placement ideas. That's just one of the benefits of our
meetings.
Another advantage is that you can improve your skill set by being taught in a safe and friendly envi
ronment. It becomes one
-
on
-
one teaching without the intimidation factor that sometimes arises within a
crowd. If you have a problem, then you can get the answers that you need. It's a great time for education
and training on correct techniques and applications. When you are learning on your own, you can develop
bad habits and incorrect methods that are hard to overcome.
You may be wondering how to sign up. It's easy to do! Just watch your newsletter to see when the
next session is scheduled and let the host know that you are interested. It's just that simple. However, you
may want to sign up as soon as possible because of the size constraints of the different shops.
If you are interested in hosting a meeting, let one of the club officers know. You may want to provide
some refreshments for the meeting, but it is not a requirement. Just have a plan for what you want to do
that day and have fun!
Until next time
..
